All about the Lower Canal Basin

Sub Title

The Lower Canal Basin is the name of the area surrounding Whipcord Lane and Sealand Road, including Gladstone Avenue, Vernon Road, Catherine Street and Charlotte Street. There’s a cool mix of both small and large houses, so you’ve got a great choice when it comes to deciding where you want to call home.

On Whipcord Lane there is a great selection of cosy, traditional houses with some still having charming period features such as original fireplace mantelpieces. In contrast Sealand Road and Charlotte Street have a range of more modern and sleek homes.

With a very definite urban vibe, ‘The Cop’ next to the river comes as a scenic getaway for when you just need a little bit of peace and quiet, strolling through nature. You can also take a scenic walk into town by following the canal, making the Lower Canal Basin one of our favourite areas to live.

When the time arrives for the big food shop, there’s no need to worry as the Greyhound Retail Park is just a 10 minute walk away! Take your pick from a multitude of shops including Aldi, Tesco and Asda. Also, if you fancy treating yourself to some new clothes, TK Maxx and Outfit are just two of the many that are available to suit your every need, as well as the new PureGym.

Invariably one of the coolest bars in Chester, Telford’s Warehouse is located canal-side at the bottom of Whipcord Lane. There’s an extensive menu with good quality nosh as well as a dancefloor with a DJ – the perfect excuse to dress up and go to one of the most popular student venues in Chester. Although not basement bargain prices, if you show your premium CSL key fob, you can get free entry on a Friday and Saturday!

The Lower Canal Basin is only a 10-15 minute walk to Parkgate Road campus, and Riverside is a 20 minute relaxed walk down the river. Queens Park takes 25-30 minutes and Kingsway is a 35 minute walk, however bus options are also available to cut travelling time in half.
